
Kickstarter California – Mexico
Welcome to the Kickstarter California Mexico Program!
The California Wines Kickstarter Mexico Program provides financial and promotional support to Mexican importers and distributors seeking to expand the presence, distribution and sales of California wines in Mexico.
Funding is limited and allocated on a first-approved, first-served basis, subject to strategic review. All activities require written approval from California Wines Mexico before they take place.
Eligibility
- Importer-distributors currently representing at least one California Wine Institute Member Winery
- Qualified companies actively evaluating California wineries for representation in Mexico
- Companies with the legal and operational capacity to import, distribute or commercialize wine in Mexico
PROGRAM FUNDING
Two ways to access support
Choose one or both opportunities below.
Opportunity #1
Individual Travel to California
Financial support is available for qualified Mexican buyers and senior commercial representatives traveling to California to meet producers and explore new business opportunities.
Eligible Participants
- Company owners or directors
- Heads of purchasing or wine buyers
- Commercial or sales directors
- Portfolio managers responsible for selecting new wine brands
Brand ambassadors, junior sales representatives, marketing personnel and guests are not eligible unless approved in advance.

Opportunity #2
California Wines Event
Financial support for importer- or distributor-led events in Mexico featuring California Wine Institute Member Wines exclusively. Events may be designed for trade professionals or consumers.
Eligible Audiences & Formats
- Trade professionals, buyers and purchasing managers
- Sommeliers, hospitality and retail professionals
- Specialized media and consumers
- Trade tastings, buyer presentations, seminars and masterclasses
- Wine dinners, consumer tastings, activations and regional roadshows
Maximum Support
Alternative amounts may be approved for strategically important activities. Reimbursement cannot exceed documented eligible costs.
PROGRAM RULES
Before your event or trip
Complete these steps before undertaking any funded activity.
- Apply to participate: complete the application form and accept the program terms and conditions.
- Submit your proposed activity, including the date, location, audience or travel details, commercial objective, and estimated budget.
- Receive written approval from California Wines Mexico before making reservations or undertaking any funded activity.
- Download the California Wines logo for use on applicable event materials.
Application timing: Submit applications at least six weeks before travel to California and four weeks before an event in Mexico.
REIMBURSEMENT
Proof of performance required
Submit all proof of performance with your invoice to your local California Wine Institute representative by June 30, 2027.
Travel to California
- Completed trip report and travel itinerary
- List of wineries and representatives met
- Brief notes on wines and commercial opportunities evaluated
- Details of follow-up negotiations, sample requests, potential listings or new brands added
- Photos of winery visits and meetings
- Proof of eligible travel expenses and payment
California Wines Event
- Invitation or event announcement and final agenda
- Attendee list and total attendee count
- List of California wineries, brands and SKUs presented
- Photos showing wines, attendees, California Wines branding and event setup
- Copies of relevant menus, tasting sheets, presentations or promotional materials
- Brief activity summary, including key outcomes and commercial opportunities generated
- Valid invoices and proof of payment
AGREEMENT
Terms, conditions & registration
Please read the terms below before completing your registration.
Payment
California Wine Institute (CWI) will pay the applicable amount within 30 days of receiving a valid invoice. Invoices must:
- Describe the activity
- Include all wire transfer details for EFT payment from the United States
- Please address your invoice for a total of €1,000 or €1,500 (inclusive of any taxes) to:
California Wine Institute, 915 L Street, Suite 1190, Sacramento, CA 95814, USA - Funding is provided as reimbursement following completion of the approved activity and submission of all required documentation.
Funding restriction
Participants must not charge the wineries they represent for any funding received through this program. If additional costs are billed back to the winery, the bill back must be reduced by the amount of Kickstarter funding received. Failure to comply requires repayment and will result in exclusion from future California Wines programs.
Other terms
Intellectual property: No rights in either party’s trademarks, brand names, copyrights, designs, or logos are transferred by this agreement.
Liability: CWI and its agents have no liability for any loss or damage in connection with participation in the activity.
Governing law: This agreement is governed by the laws of the State of California.
EDUCATION
Capstone California
As part of Kickstarter, participants are encouraged to complete the Capstone California online certification course – a comprehensive guide to California wines created by internationally recognized experts.
Free enrollment for Kickstarter participants
Levels 1 and 2 are available at no cost through the link below (normally €75 and €125). Approved applicants will receive a complimentary access link. Please do not share the enrollment link externally.
Normally, each company may receive support under only one opportunity per fiscal year. Participation in both may be authorized when funds remain available and the first activity has been successfully completed.
No, funding must be used and invoiced to CWI within the applicable program year and cannot be carried over to future funding periods.
Yes. Regional activities across the country are encouraged, particularly in strategic markets such as Monterrey, Guadalajara, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, Mérida, etc.
